Description
“Stalemate,” a play based on the novel by Icchokas Meras, takes us back to the Second World War and tells the story of the events in the Vilnius Ghetto. Despite the Nazi cruelty and the constant threat of death, it is here that the most beautiful love blossoms, resistance fights and hope smoulders. People have a choice even when there seems to be no way out. Father Abraham accepts the terms of Ghetto Commander Shoger’s fateful game: his son Isaac plays chess with Shoger. If the commandant loses, the children of the ghetto will not be shot, but Isaac will die; if Isaac loses, he will live, but the children will die. The almost impossible solution – a draw – would save everyone. This is a play about the choices that our times offer us. Although this story is set in the last century, we must face our own decisions. Will we be able to make the right choices?
