Rehearsals for the premiere of VEIDAS/VISAGE, inspired by the biography and thoughts of philosopher E. Levinas, have begun
The enigmatic rehearsal room is home to the word and the thought – the creative process of the premiere “Veidas/Visage”. The performance is dedicated to the memory of the philosopher Emmanuel Levinas (1906-1995) and the theatrical actualization of his ideas. Lithuanian, English and French are spoken at the rehearsal table. The upcoming performance is by Vincent Adelus, Isabelle Adelus & Suran (France). The play will be performed by four actors of the National Kaunas Drama Theatre: Marius Karolis Gotbergas, Motiejus Ivanauskas, Artūras Sužiedėlis, Povilas Jatkevičius. The creative team is advised by the philosopher Viktoras Bakhmetjevas, who has translated Emmanuel Levinas’ books and written articles about him.
The performance is a joint project with the Théâtre d’Esch in Esch-et-Alsace, Luxembourg. The project was born out of the search for common points of contact between the 2022 European Capitals of Culture – Kaunas and Esch am Alzet. The link between the two is the philosopher and humanist Emmanuel Levinas, who was born in Kaunas and lived in France.
Vincent Adelus and Isabelle Adelus & Suran aim to develop the ideas of Levinas’ philosophy of the Other, the Face, the Responsibility. The Other expands our own limits to new horizons. The Other helps us to be ourselves. The face of the Other is a window to the infinite that we can only experience thanks to the Other. The Other gives meaning to our lives and brings us out of the loneliness of being.
Starting with fragments of interviews, images, and sounds, the actors bring Levinas’ words into our contemporary world.
Premiere on the 10th, 11th, and 12th of November 2022 on the Big Stage. Tickets on sale soon.
