“The Forest Brother” is subtitled into English on February 23  at 6 P.M. Unbelievable story of hiding for 50 years is revealed by means of great Lithuanian and Latvian humor.

Jonas Petrutis was in the town twice, had no wife and children, worked nowhere and hurt no fly. He ran away from the army, lived in his sister’s shadow and believed that it was God who saved him from the wolf… Definitely he was not the forest brother who spent days and nights in partisan bunkers with a gun and the last bullet in hand … Jonas had no idea to fight or resist. He decided to hide and to retreat from the battle-field of the Second World War.  The director was inspired by a true story of Latvian Jānis Pīnups (1925-2007). He became a sensation in 1995, when after 50 years of hiding from the soviets in the woods, he decided to come back to the society. The director Valters Sīlis says, “I would like that the audience would ask themselves what is better to fight or retreat?”

This is not a documentary but rather a synthesis of humor and tragedy used to depict the most painful and unavoidable historical moments. The main focus of the director’s work is to disclose an important historical fact, which transforms into artistic fiction in the theater space. The new drama of the play writer links Latvian and Lithuanian postwar experience. The director Valters Sīlis asks, “Does being a Forest brother mean freedom from the clutches of the system or the longest avoidance of responsibility in the human history?”.
